Them triremes..

The triremes which saved Greece from the Persians were not the same as used in the Peleoponnesian War. Themistocles fleet were lighter and lower than their Persian opponents and not decked-over.
The smaller number of epibatai tells of less space to carry troops. The 10 hoplites and 4 archers were enough to defend the forecastle when ships were in contact briefly during a ramming attack but not enough to risk using boarding as a main tactic.

I have made some models with a narrow deck bridge which link the forecastle and the quarter deck. The thranites are visible, toiling over their oars and the helmsman with his tillers. The trierarch's chair is empty as yet.. Their are low rails on the sides.

Persian version

There is not much evidence for what Persian/Phoenician triremes looked like.
I decided to make the protection for the increased number of epibatoi better, to give them a pointed ram and a different sternpost.

Now for a bit more research on decoration to give more variety and ornament.
Also a pentekonter is needed. Then on to the 4s 5s etc........

Tri Tri and Tri again..

Managed to get something which is worthwhile. With forecastle and epotides they look the part. Basically two pieces of card with 3 additions which are not necessary for quick assembly.

The family group photo shows the ancestry of the 10-centimetere trireme.

Now maybe for some Persian-Phoenician variety ?

The new models develop apace. I aim at reducing construction time and complexity.
These latest down the slip-way are made from just two pieces of card and take 10 minutes or less to put together.

Note epiotis is now there!

Greek-style hide screens for rowers. Maybe some cover for the epibatoi next ?

I can now put some effort into making Greek, Persian and Phoenician models etc and no longer have to press 'Roman' types into service. 5 can be fitted onto one A4 card sheet.

A new type of ship model taking shape.

A blend of  techniques ad intended to gIve a 10cm trireme as basic scale.
Should also print out at 4 to an a4 card sheet and have minimal assembly.
